Mrs. Hamlin was the daughter of George B Gates and Sarah A Gilligan Gates. Mr. Gates was the Director of the Bank of Buffalo and involved in a management capacity with many of the local railroads of the time.

Kate married William Hamlin, a member of the prestigious Buffalo Hamlin Family which included Cicero Hamlin the owner of Hamlin Park race track for whom the "Hamlin Park" area of Buffalo is named.

Kate was the President of the Board of Women Manager for the Pan American Exposition held in Buffalo in 1901.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Hamlin lived at 800 West Ferry.
