Barcalo was the first company to manufacture sliding-side cribs and diversified with a variety of products including a line of tools and forged parts for airplanes. The company's lasting claim to fame is based on the famous BarcaLounger reclining chair.

In 1940, Edward Joel Barcalo acquired a license to manufacture "scientifically articulated" motion chairs patented by Dr. Anton Lorenz.
