Turkish Room of Crown Prince Rudolf - Hofmobiliendepot Imperial Furniture Collection
Vienna, AustriaAt the age of fifteen, Crown Prince Rudolf (1858-1889) moved into an apartment of his own on the second floor of the Schweizertrakt of the Vienna Hofburg in 1874.
After the marriage between the Crown Prince and Stephanie of Belgium (1864-1945) on the 10 May 1881, the apartment was enlarged. The former Gobelin Room was converted into a Turkish Room. In 1881, Crown prince Rudolph had set out on a journey to Upper Egypt and the Holy Land, which may explain why he had the room furnished in an oriental style. The Turkish Room served as the Crown Prince's private study and contained numerous personal items.
An inventory made up in 1889, shortly after the tragic death of the Crown Prince, lists 151 items, including armchairs, divans, Turkish stools and a large number of oriental carpets as displayed here, as well as oriental objets d'art and weapons, grouped in decorative arrangements.
