Eastlake cane-seated side chair
On display at the Athenaeum
of Philadelphia in 2005
This type of chair was mass-produced by large chair factories that sought to keep abreast of the changing tastes and fashions of the day.
The turned legs and rectangular back of the chair are inspired by Sheraton Fancy chairs of the 1810-30 period. While the design conforms to Charles Eastlake's principle of simplicity, the use of walnut veneers is a pretentious touch that would not have appealed to him.
