The Nortons were Chicago people who summered in the Chautauqua Institution.

To design their houses in both Chicago and Chautauqua, they chose Chicago architect Howard Van Doren Shaw.

Mrs. Norton donated money for Norton Memorial Hall as a memorial to her husband and daughter Ruth.
