Catherine was the wife of Dr. Benjamin Taylor, the first African American doctor in Buffalo, practicing from 1862-1887. Dr. Taylor had gone west with the gold rush, with a member of Buffalo's Talbert family, returning a wealthy man. As a result of his fortune, he and his wife became one of the wealthiest landowners in Buffalo.

Dr. Taylor died in 1900.

Catherine continued to live in their house at 90 Walnut St. until his death, in 1921, at the age of 92.
