Buffalo Seminary Boarding Program
Since 2009 SEM has had a boarding program. From 8 girls in a house on Bidwell Parkway west of Elmwood it has grown to 50 beds in four historic homes adjacent to the school. The 5th house SEM owns was named in June 2016 for our now retired head of school Jody Douglas; a new assistant head of school and her young family now live in it. On Soldier's Circle we have Jody Douglass House (#26), Niscah House (#30) and Lipke House (#16); on Potomac Ave. we have Oishei House (#678) and Wendt House (#682). All have been named through either generous donations of families or foundations. A capital campaign in 2017 allowed for the construction of a courtyard to link the five student and facuklty residences to the school building. We opened the Magavern-Sutton Courtyard in September of 2017. The space was created by demolishing two old garages and connecting existing backyards. We did extensive electrical work to deal with poles, cables, wires and transformers, and an alumna landscape architect Mary Magavern Worrell '60 designed and supervised the space and its plantings. The courtyard is a unique teaching, learning, relaxation and event space for students and faculty with a great lawn, benches and pathways. It is lighted at night and features heated sidewalks. Much of the construction and renovation on the houses, the courtyard and the school building was done by LeHigh Construction Group. - Buffalo Seminary Director of Communications Erin Kelly in 2017 |
