Arcos Rojos and Tower - Guggenheim Museum
Bilbao, Spain
(bill BAH oh)

Architect: Frank Gehry
Built: 1997

Bridge: La Salve Bridge (Puente de La Salveis),  a vehicular bridge. La Salve used to be an industrial looking bridge, made of concrete and metal. Then...

Vertical red structure encompassing the bridge: Arcos Rojos by Daniel Buren.  In celebration of its tenth anniversary, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao commissioned French artist Daniel Buren to create a site-specific work that uses the La Salve Bridge, located next to the museum.

"Buren decided to make the structure of the La Salve Bridge less brutal, but more visible. With this in mind, he designed a vertical piece perpendicular to the bridge, out of which he cut three circles. It will create a central circle around the road, in addition to two semicircles that will also be reflected on the water and in the air. The surface is red in color, while the outer edges of the piece and the inside of the arches are vertically striped in black and white. The red color was therefore chosen to contrast with the green of the bridge, and to add an additional colored reflection on the titanium." - Guggenheim Bilbao, Daniel Buren, Arcos Rojos

Sculptural vertical tower: connects the overpass with the museum (note stairs)
