East façade, front entrance. At the request of Pope Leo X, a member of the Medici family, Michelangelo supplied designs in white Carrara marble in 1518 for the unfinished Romanesque facade, but the plans were never implemented, so the bare bricks are still visible and to this day nobody has financed a fitting façade.
