Emil Hanke was born Aug 30, 1880 in Buffalo; he married a Buffalo girl, Augusta Graf in 1909 after graduating from Colgate in 1907, followed by additional studies at Columbia. He had a wide-ranging career, first as a gymnastics teacher, then as headmaster of several small private schools in NY and PA, and then working for the YMCA in a variety of program-development positions involving travel all over the US and Europe (he also gave travel lectures on luxury cruisers!). He was fluent in German, as was his wife - typical for a significant segment of the Buffalo population in that era.
