Illustrated Architecture Dictionary
A room at or near the top of a tower which contains bells and their supporting timbers; the bell tower itself
Old French: "berfrei" = a tower. Not connected with "bell"

In Japanese Buddhist temples, the building or tower holding the large bonsho bell is a shoro.
