Investing in the Art Community
"Time for another WPA?" was an article by Mark Sommer featured in The Buffalo News on October 17, 2010. It formed the basis for the panel discussion "Arts for the People," moderated by Sommer at the Buffalo & Erie County Public Central Library from 6-9 PM on October 21, 2010.
Panelists included Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Artistic Director
JoAnn Falleta, the Oishei Foundation's Paul Hogan, historian Mark
Goldman and University at Buffalo professor David Herzberg.
Introductory comments were made by Library Director Bridget
Quinn-Carey. Audience participation was encouraged and often passionate.
A key question raised was the possible need for a new business model
for the arts based on seeing the arts as essential to education,
lifelong learning and quality of life for all the residents in our
region.
This community discussion was recorded by Dennis Galucki (from audience
level) with permission from the library for The Center for the Study of
Art, Architecture, History & Nature (C-SAAHN).
