White Horse Courtyard is also known as Farewell Courtyard in memory of Napoleon's farewell ceremony before his departure for the Isle of Elba in 1814. French Renaissance horseshoe staircase, constructed in 1632-34. The celebrated interplay of curves is one of the reasons for the admiration that this staircase universally inspires.
