Reception hall. The gold-plated, three-story chandelier (originally gas) above the staircase was in danger of being discarded when Delaware North Companies bought the house in 1979. When it was cleaned, it was found to be gold-plated -- and not merely gold-leafed as was thought -- and worth something in the six-figure bracket. The chandelier is cleaned by lowering it using a crank in the attic.
