Chautauqua: A Historic Planned Community
The Chautauqua Institution, a 750-acre lakeside
community, was founded in 1874 as a summer training center for
Sunday-school teachers but soon offered diverse educational and
cultural programs, giving birth to the national Chautauqua Movement
that hosted programs around the country. The institution lives on today
as a National Historic District, with buildings by regionally important
architects such as E.B.Green. Recipient of a 2010 Silver Award at the
International Awards for Livable Communities, it is a model for good
community planning and design, and for the integration of the built and
natural environment. Preservation architect Bonnie Foit-Albert will
discuss the Chautauqua community's unique blend of educational and
cultural facilities. ---

Selected The Buffalo News Editorials Following the Conference:
While our fond memories of the City of Light are still fresh, I’d like
to publicly express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the
citizens of Buffalo-Niagara who helped make the National Preservation
Conference in Buffalo an unparalleled success.....
The recent National Trust Conference in Buffalo appeared to be a huge
success at many levels. Part of that success should be credited to The
Buffalo News for covering it extensively, before and during the
conference, and from so many different perspectives.
Mike Vogel’s
Viewpoints article was
especially compelling and should help us all better see the treasures,
beauty and good neighbors we have in Buffalo on a daily basis, long
after the visitors have gone home. For many of us, we can more proudly
call Buffalo, “home.” Thanks to The News for helping to bring us the
good news!
