Sanctuary of Horus - Horus Temple at Edfu, Egypt

This sanctuary is the holiest part of the temple. It centers on a black-granite shrine, against the wall in the photo, That was dedicated by Nectanebo II, making it the oldest relic in the temple. This once contained the gilded wooden cult image of Horus.

In font of the shrine is an offering table and also the model of the ceremonial barque (barge) on which Horus was carried during festivals. Parts of it were found when the temple was excavated.

For information about Horus's consort Het-hert - another name for Hathor - visiting him annually from her temple at Dendura. see Festival of the Beautiful Reunion.
