In August 1930, the Third World Congress of Educators of the Deaf was held in Buffalo. Some 3,000 educators were present from all over the world. During this event, the National Association of the Deaf presented St. Mary's with a statue of Abbe de L'Epee (who had opened the first school for the deaf in Paris, France). This bronze monument is the work of Eugene A. Hannan, a deaf sculptor ... "
Hannan was born and raised in D.C. and attended Kendall Deaf School.
He went to Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran Art & Design School,
even went to Paris, Italy, and Spain to study art. He resided in
Westport, CT. He sculpted that statue in Paris and it was placed at St.
Mary's school. He
has several
sculpted works in the public areas including Connecticut." - Kathleen
