- In hoc signo vinces is a Latin phrase
meaning "With this as your standard you shall have victory." According
to legend, Constantine I adopted this as a motto after his vision of a chi rho (PX)
on the sky just before the Battle of Milvian Bridge in the year 312.
Afonso de Albuquerque (1453-1515) was the second
governor of Portuguese India who conquered and established the Portuguese colonial
empire in the Indian ocean... Shortly before his death he was awarded
viceroy and "Duke of Goa" by
the Portuguese king.
