1804 was the year that Ellicott laid out his "radial plan" for the Village of New Amsterdam. One of the radials of that plan was the street, later named Genesee Street, conceived by Ellicott as a shorter more direct route connecting New Amsterdam and Batavia. Initially it was called the Batavia Road,

The road, although begun in 1805, was not completed through to Batavia until 1808.
